Mike Johnston is a street art evangelist (TRUTH) bringing the message of joy to the masses.  He loves to paint on found objects and on giant concrete walls.  The four years that he and his wife lived overseas in Asia and the Middle East really shaped his creative process. One thing he hopes to be true about his art is that it brings a smile.  His major influences have been comic books, Jesus Cristo, and street art.

Zuzu : WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
Truth : I’m a military brat and moved all over. Every 2 years we were somewhere new. I was born in Germany and finished high school in San Antonio.

Zuzu : HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN AUSTIN?
Truth : My wife and I came to Austin in the summer of 2010. We were teaching overseas before that.

Zuzu : WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO START CREATING ART?
Truth : As a kid I was a massive fan of G.I.Joe. I was seriously obsessed. So after watching the cartoon I would study my action figures and try to create battle scenes of my own.

Zuzu : HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PAINTING?
Truth : I got into painting in college. I didn’t really care for it before then. And shortly after I began experimenting with spray paint and paint markers.

Zuzu : ARTISTS DO YOU LOOK UP TO?
Truth : Sam Flores, Etam Cru, ARYZ, Os Gemeos, Meggs,Tristan Eaton, Saner, Mr. Thoms, London Police, Banksy, Herakut, Nosego, Nychos and of course the Spratx family!!

Zuzu : ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER ARTISTS OUT THERE?
Truth : Be inspired by other artists, but don’t be discouraged. I often get caught up thinking my work isn’t as good as the art that’s around me and/or on the web. But we are only going to improve if we stay hungry!! Keep pushing to get better!
